“Le violette,” from Pirro e Demierio is our next selection.

The vocal music of Alessandro Scarlatti holds a special place in the 24 Italian Songs and Arias. During the Italian Baroque period, Allesandro Scarlatti was “Mr. Opera.” His operatic works were enormously popular among the opera going public, which in those days mostly consisted of the upper-class. And one can see why. His music has a consistent rhythmic strength, emotional integrity, and beautiful melodies which appeal equally to singers and the public. There are at least five compositions of Scarlatti’s included in the 28 Italian songs and arias (the new and updated edition of the old classic 24 Italian Songs and Arias).
